Tension prevailed on Friday night around the Madras high court campus as a group of advocates staged a protest within the premises. A police contingent entered the campus late in the evening to evict them from the complex.

About 25 lawyers had stayed put inside the complex till late in the night, raising concerns within the judiciary. Eventually, the chief justice’s office gave permission to the police to enter the premises to clear out the protestors. After repeated announcements through megaphones asking advocates to vacate the campus, city police commissioner K Radhakrishnan, along with a contingent of the commando force, entered the premises. A section of lawyers then mediated to persuade their agitated colleagues to leave.

Earlier, as fresh violence was reported from across the state, director general of police K P Jain issued shoot-at-sight orders against anyone burning buses and destroying public property. “I have issued shoot-at-sight orders against anyone resorting to violence and damaging public property,” Jain told The Times of India.

The world’s top software firm Microsoft has been asked to cut its workforce by 10%, or about 9,100 employees, to tell the market that profits are more important than revenue growth in difficult times.

Brokerage firm Oppenheimer and Co’s analyst Brad Reback has said in a report on Microsoft that such layoff exercise “would be a healthy move for the company.”

The move would be well received by the market and would “signal that profitability is more important than revenue growth during this very difficult time,” Reback added.

Calling for a 10% reduction on the company’s payrolls, Reback said in his report for the institutional investors of Microsoft, this would result in an approximately 10% gain in its earnings per share.

The software giant had close to 91,000 employees on its payrolls at the end of July-September quarter.

Earlier in October, Microsoft had put in place a hiring freeze on some of its divisions, such as entertainment and devices businesses that make products like X-Box and Zune.

There have been some unconfirmed reports on blogs that the company would announce some major layoffs in the first month of 2009.

Microsoft is scheduled to release its second-quarter results for the fiscal year 2008-09 on January 22.

Battling the economic crisis, companies in their bid to save costs, have announced more than one lakh job cuts in December alone in the US, while so far in 2008 there have been close to 20 lakh layoffs.

Steven Gerrard Arrested for Alleged assault.

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard was arrested today after a brawl at a night-spot.

The England midfielder remains in custody after officers were called to an incident in Bold Street, Southport, at about 2.30am.

Merseyside Police said the 28-year-old and five other men were arrested on suspicion of assault.

A police spokesman said: “Merseyside Police is investigating an assault that took place in the early hours of Monday December 29 on Bold Street in Southport.

“At around 2.30am this morning officers attended a disturbance at a licensed premises on Bold Street.

“Six men were arrested on suspicion of section 20 assault on Lord Street.

“The men, four aged 33, 31, 29 and 19, who all come from the Huyton area, a 28-year-old man from Formby and an 18-year-old man from Litherland remain in police custody.

“A 34-year-old man from Southport was taken to hospital with facial injuries which are not believed to be life threatening.”

Gerrard scored twice for Liverpool in yesterday’s 5-1 win at Newcastle.

Gerrard went out with friends following the win at St James’ Park.

The Reds captain, who scored twice, yesterday hailed his table-topping Liverpool side as the best he has played in.

He called on everyone at Anfield to enjoy being top of the league after Liverpool extended their lead over Chelsea thanks to the emphatic win.
