PlayStation maker looks to cut 5 percent of its workforce citing “sudden and rapid changes in the global economic environment.”

Days after Microsoft declared the Xbox 360 outsold the PlayStation 3 three-to-one during “Black Friday” sales in the United States, Sony has announced cutbacks. The Tokyo-based electronics giant will slash 8,000 jobs and close several of its manufacturing facilities in a bid to save $1.1 billion (£745 million) by the end of next financial year. The job losses will come out of core Sony electronics divisions, though no official breakdown has been revealed. days.

As well as job cuts Sony is also looking to reduce investment by 30 percent in electronics operations by withdrawing from unprofitable and non-core businesses. The electronics giant also confirmed it was to close around 10 percent of its 57 manufacturing sites, with all restructuring said to be completed by March 31, 2010. It will also raise the pricing of some of its products to alleviate the impact of the stronger yen.

The cuts follow more bad news from Asian electronics rival Samsung which hours before Sony’s announcement said it was to cut its sales targets and spending, after lower-than-expected fourth-quarter revenues and a drop in expected demand for 2009.

Last month, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime told Forbes that the Wii should finally be widely available in stores this holiday season. Today, a Reuters report suggests that not only have supplies of the motion-sensing system have drastically increased since last year, but demand for it remains insatiable.

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata told Reuters that more than 800,000 Wii systems sold in the US during the week of the Thanksgiving holiday (Nov. 23-29). That more than doubled the 350,000 Nintendo sold for the same week last year, and approached the company’s entire November 2007 haul of 981,000 units. As of September 30, the console sold nearly 35 million units worldwide, and is the best-selling platform of the current console generation.

As for the DS Lite, Iwata said sales of Nintendo’s handheld were up 20 percent year-over-year for the week, but did not provide exact figures. The uptick in sales comes despite the October unveiling of the DSi, a third redesign of the handheld. The dual-camera, Web browser-enabled handheld won’t be available domestically until “well into 2009″, but has been selling briskly in Japan since it went on sale there last month.

Iwata also addressed the worldwide economic slowdown, saying Nintendo has thus far been isolated from its effects. “When the economy is strong, people tend to buy three things from the top of their wish list,” Iwata told the news wire. “But when things are bad, people often buy only the first thing on their list. Fortunately for us, a lot of shoppers put our products at the top of their list.”

In many modern games, you rain death upon your enemies; how refreshing, then, that your main task in Prince of Persia is to breathe life into a darkening world. That doesn’t mean that the forces of evil aren’t on your tail in this open-world platformer, but the most indelible moments of this enchanting journey are uplifting, rather than destructive. Similarly, the latest iteration in this long-running franchise is a rejuvenation for the series, and it’s an ambitious one, offering up a new titular prince and casting certain game traditions aside in favor of player immersion. And for the most part it succeeds, eliminating illusion-breaking mechanics like game-over screens and long loading times in the process. This re-imagining comes with a few caveats, however, and if you’re a longtime series fan, you’ll quickly discover–and possibly resent–that Prince of Persia is, far and away, the easiest game in the series. But if you can clear your mind and let the game’s magic wash over you, its easygoing joy and visual beauty will charm you into forgiving a sprinkling of flaws.

When it launched in April, Grand Theft Auto IV on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 was greeted with a chorus of approval from gamers and critics alike. With the PC edition of the game arriving in stores earlier this week, the reaction has been notably different.

Forum threads on GameSpot, Steam, and elsewhere online are lighting up with complaints from gamers about a host of performance issues. Poor frame rates even on powerful rigs, short draw distances, crashes, and missing textures are among a slew of stated issues gamers have with the title.

Not content to vent on forums, disgruntled GTAIV PC gamers have taken to Amazon.com and panned the port with negative user reviews. In addition to complaining about the game’s performance, the Amazon reviewers have taken exception to its use of SecuROM DRM technology. Of the 56 reviews on the retail site as of this writing, 46 of them have issued a 1-star-out-of-5 rating, with the customer average now sitting at 1.5 stars.

The technical support section of Rockstar’s official site acknowledges a host of known issues. For instance, Rockstar tells gamers with Nvidia 7900 series cards that a driver issue is causing the game to not render anything in the distance, leading to functionally unplayable performance. According to Rockstar, “NVidia is working on releasing a new driver as soon as possible.”

The Rockstar tech support site also suggests that missing texture issues could be caused by driver tuning programs, and includes a list of dozens of possible error codes players may have encountered. Additionally, ATI card owners are advised to set the game’s “MipMap Detail Level” slider to “quality” or they will see blacked-out textures, while the ATI 1900 series specifically has problems with flickering shadows. A patch for the shadow issue is underway, according to the developer.

As for performance issues on high-end rigs, Rockstar’s tech support documentation contained the following explanation: “Most users using current PC hardware as of December 2008 are advised to use medium graphics settings. Higher settings are provided for future generations of PCs with higher specifications than are currently widely available.”

In an effort to further cut costs, Sony Computer Entertainment plans to further its influence in India. The company is transferring tech from its London studio to India and will also train local developers to balance costly dev costs. Says Sony’s Atindriya Bose:

The future of the Indian game development market will depend on the quality of the game developers who are starting at a zero base.

The Indian subsidiary also has a PS2 game software manufacturing facility that it makes available to other publishers looking to release games on the Indian subcontinent at local price points, and Sony even earns royalities on these games as well.

India is surely riding the big wave of development which is spreading in the region. With a fabulous ten
times growth in domestic sales and a blooming economy, the Asian country is becoming a very attractive
market for international companies. Sony has recently stressed the importance of the region in game development, through the voice of their country manager for India, Atindriya Bose.

“The competence and the state of readiness of the Indian developers make it imperative that India will soon emerge as a key development hub for many international games companies. There are already established players in the animation area. The country’s capability in the IT space today is unquestioned. There are gaming companies being set up to be able to combine these strengths and move into the space of game development”, he declared in an interview.

Also, there are actions to back up these words, Sony being the first one to see the potential in this country and has extended the development of games. Through signing contracts with Indian developers for both local and international games and content for the PlayStation platform, SCEE has insured the first profits which will be made in the country. Bose also declared that gaming in the region had jumped a very impressive six times according to the most recent fiscal reports.

No doubt India will become an interesting country where companies can invest. Sony is now really stressing its importance and, by doing so, invites other developers and publishers to invest and help accelerate the already ascending trend of the nation’s development.
