A team of security researchers and academics has broken a core piece of internet technology. They made their work public at the 25th Chaos Communication Congress in Berlin today. The team was able to create a rogue certificate authority and use it to issue valid SSL certificates for any site they want. The user would have no indication that their HTTPS connection was being monitored/modified.

This attack is possible because of a flaw in MD5. MD5 is a hashing algorithm; each unique file has a unique hash. In 2004, a team of Chinese researchers demonstrated creating two different files that had the same MD5 hash. In 2007, another team showed theoretical attacks that took advantage of these collisions. The team focused on SSL certificates signed with MD5 for their exploit.

The first step was doing some broad scans to see what certificate authorities (CA) were issuing MD5 signed certs. They collected 30K certs from Firefox trusted CAs. 9K of them were MD5 signed. 97% of those came from RapidSSL.

Having selected their target, the team needed to generate their rogue certificate to transfer the signature to. They employed the processing power of 200 Playstation 3s to get the job done. For this task, it’s the equivalent of 8000 standard CPU cores or $20K of Amazon EC2 time. The task takes ~1-2 days to calculate. The tricky part was knowing the content of the certificate that would be issued by RapidSSL. They needed to predict two variables: the serial number and the timestamp. RapidSSL’s serial numbers were all sequential. From testing, they knew that RapidSSL would always sign six seconds after the order was acknowledged. Knowing these two facts they were able to generate a certificate in advance and then purchase the exact certificate they wanted. They’d purchase certificates to advance the serial number and then buy on the exact time they calculated.

The cert was issued to their particular domain, but since they controlled the content, they changed the flags to make themselves an intermediate certificate authority. That gave them authority to issue any certificate they wanted. All of these ‘valid’ certs were signed using SHA-1.

If you set your clock back to before August 2004, you can try out their live demo site. This time is just a security measure for the example and this would work identically with a certificate that hasn’t expired. There’s a project site and a much more detailed writeup than this.

To fix this vulnerability, all CAs are now using SHA-1 for signing and Microsoft and Firefox will be blacklisting the team’s rogue CA in their browser products

2009 can be a make or break year for the PlayStation 3, latest sales show that it is dropping away from the Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii in the USA so this can be seen as a battle lost on Sony’s front, however remember this is a (console) war so its not over yet.

There are many things going in Sony’s favour in 2009 which will help them to close the gap on there competitors. The first of which is that currently it does seem that it will have a slighty stronger line up of exclusive titles in terms of potential console shifters on PlayStation 3 with titles such as Uncharted 2, Killzone 2, White Knight Story and Gran Turismo 5. This line up will prove crucial when trying to win over potential buyers in 2009.

The Second thing which is going in Sony’s favour is Japan. A range of JRPG’s have been released for the Xbox 360 and while they have boosted Xbox 360 sales, they haven’t been able to shift a massive amount more units. The PS3 has a great chance of increasing the gap on the Xbox 360 in Japan with Final Fantasy XIII being released as a PS3 exclusive over there. Japan is one area where sony can really use to there advantage in order to close the worldwide sales gap.

The third reason why the PS3 will be able to gain ground on the Xbox 360 is Blu-ray, this holiday season has seen a large increase in the amount of HDTV’s sold and with blu-ray’s impact on the market growing at a fast rate, alot more people will be looking into Blu-ray and with the PlayStation 3 already having a blu-ray player built in this will work in Sony’s advantage.

All these reasons will help to ensure that Sony has a successful year in 2009 and since a price cut looks likey at some point in 2009 this will only add to the reasons. Reconfigure your XP’s Network connections to make it detect Hamachi first. Go to All Programs > Accessories > Communications > Network Connections. Go to the menu > Advanced > Advanced Settings. Put Hamachi on top of the list.

One person has to create a Hamachi Server and get everyone to join the sever. Ping your friends via Hamachi to ensure the connections are active between you and your friends.

Go to the folder that you have installed Left 4 Dead.
Create a new text file in this folder and put in the following:

Q. For some people they can connect, and some other people, they’re getting the Restricted to class C LAN only error messages.

A. Valve is very strict in the way LAN works in Left 4 Dead. The first two octets of your IP address must be the same in order for the players to join, or else you will get the Class Restrict Error.

For example, if the server host has a hamachi ID of 5.111.128.176. Then all of the other players must have IP addresses of 5.111.xxx.xxx. If you have an IP address of 5.112.134.283, then you will not be able to join.

Unfortunately, it is not easy to change the hamachi ID. You’ll have to recreate a hamachi profile in order to get a different Hamachi ID. It is best to have all 4 players to recreate the Hamachi ID around the same time so you’ll get 4 IP address with the same 2 octets.

To Recreate your Hamachi ID, go into the following directory
(make sure you can view hidden folders, enable it in the View Option):

C:\Documents and Settings\***USER****\Application Data\

Delete the Hamachi Folder. Then Launch Hamachi and go through the mini tutorial to obtain your new Hamachi ID.

Publisher widens staff reductions to 10 percent, will reap $120 million annual savings; Need for Speed Undercover studio moving in with EA Canada, label will remain intact.

The day before Halloween, Electronic Arts spooked its staff by announcing it was laying off 6 percent of its workforce. Last week, it alarmed analysts by announcing–without revealing any specifics–that its annual earnings would fall below expectations. As a result, it was expanding its layoffs and canceling future projects.

Today, the company announced an expanded restructuring that will see EA increase layoffs to include 10 percent of its worldwide workforce. The 1,000 pink slips will be sent out by March 31, 2009, and will encompass the “consolidation or closure of at least nine studio and publishing locations,” according to EA.

The restructuring will both cost and save money. After incurring charges of $55 million to $65 million as a result of severance packages and other reorganization-related expenses, EA anticipates an annual savings of $120 million.

Analysts blamed EA’s troubles on the underperformance of several games, such as Mirror’s Edge, Dead Space, and Need for Speed Undercover. Little surprise, then, that one affected location is Undercover developer EA Black Box, which will be closing its office facilities. (In an ironic footnote, Black Box’s official site still bears the tag line “Growth…and lots of it!”) The staff of the Vancouver-based shop, which is currently working on Skate 2, will be relocated to EA Canada’s offices in the nearby suburb of Burnaby. However, an EA representative told that the studio name will remain.

“This does not mean that the Black Box studio is closing,” said the rep. “The studio is moving to our Burnaby campus to share the facility with EAC and other EA teams that operate out of our state-of-the-art facility. We will operate two distinct studios, each with their own distinct culture and teams, out of our Burnaby facility.”

EA said that Black Box’s expected move date is June 2009. The rep also said that the studio’s games would follow as well, but declined to comment if any were being considered for cancellation. “[We've made] no announcements regarding franchises,” stated the rep.

In the initial news release, EA also issued the following blanket statement outlining how it will examine each of its series’ viability: “EA is implementing a plan to narrow its product portfolio to focus on hit games with higher margin opportunities. The company remains committed to taking creative risks, investing in new games, leading the industry in the growing mobile and online businesses, and delivering high-quality games to consumers.”

Because a normal failure isn’t epic enough by itself. Sony, with the Playstation 3, dedicated to the art of fiasco, obliterated the competition by having no less than five huge mistakes, probably more, that kicked them from the head of the pack to barely limping behind in today’s console war.

#1: Grrr… Look at the big hardware!

Arguably, the Playstation 2 was at the top of the previous generation console war. The Xbox was just getting into the swing of things, barely sustained by the various Halos. Microsoft’s mammoth did, however, sport some slightly more impressive hardware.

Sony must have taken this personally, because they spent all manner of time and finance on the PS3, loading it with the absolute most ritzy meats and cheeses providing a massively powerful system, well ahead of the competition.

The only problem it hasn’t been utilized. Games on the PS3 look pretty much same as games on the other systems because, especially in the case of multiple platforms, the developers aren’t going to put in an extra thousand hours to make the game look worlds better on just one system.

It’s possible in here that developers will start using the impressive pieces of hardware for some really amazing things, but by then there’s a good chance that the next generation of consoles will already be out.

#2: Lets have a big fancy home entertainment system.

The Playstation 3, the system you can watch all of your Blu-Ray movies, play all of your video games. Surf the internet, listen to music, play video files of every shape and size. You can even link it to your PSP for more of the same purposes. It’s the ultimate in household entertainment.

Great idea, in theory. The only problem is that games still haven’t really crashed mainstream media yet; most people don’t think of systems as being able to do anything else besides play games, so they aren’t going to buy something they personally won’t use. Also because they view them primarily for children, most doting parents will purchase the cheapest product for their kids (Wii?).

Sony took a risk, but the market still isn’t ready right now to see video games and thus consoles as a form of entertainment accessible by anyone save children, so even the system itself is very likely only going to be utilized by the one who owns it.

#3: Lets make games into interactive films.

Many of the launch and subsequent exclusive titles have this really weird tendency to be very cinematic in presentation. Uncharted, the martial arts drama Heavenly Sword (massively underrated), and whatever-the-crap-it-is game Lair.(not so underrated). Generally speaking, they look and feel like big budget Hollywood films, complete with bevity.

Maybe it has to do with their home entertainment vision, but it just doesn’t really work with regular gamers (despite their attempts, that remains their audience). They’re expecting something that they’re used to, and aren’t thrilled by the result.

#4: Lets fight the wrong war.

Again, probably because of their home entertainment obsession, they spent a whole lot of time and resources fighting the war with HD-DVD, promoting their own Blu-Ray system. They won, in the end and kudos to them for it. Only problem they didn’t keep an eye on those sneaky Microsoft devils, who snuck into base camp and stole all of their guns and ammunition. Which directly leads into:

#5: Exclusives? We don’t need no stinkin’ exclusives!

All of this misplaced focus made Sony lose developers. Game creators all walked off right into Microsoft’s soft, warm, huggy arms and massive budget. Sony sat there, oblivious, praying that their super-powerful home entertainment monolith succeeded, eyes shut, covering their ears while their empire crumbled.

There’s a lot of overlap in games between systems, so the only particular reason to own one over the other is the exclusive titles. Playstation 3 has a few good ones, and they’re definitely showing signs of a comeback (especially overseas), but they’re nothing if not incredibly lucky that they didn’t lose it all together. Only the slightly unsatisfying gimmicky nature of the Wii and the crippling hardware problems of the 360 kept the PS3 afloat.

Pretty much all Sony needs to do to come out of this is to remember that the Playstation has always had success as a gaming system. If they follow that formula, then there shouldn’t be any problems.

Maybe Home will be as epic as they’re hoping, and maybe they’ll actually get a lot more exclusive games to sweeten the deal. Or maybe lightening will strike and people will start to buy into the total home entertainment package. Even if, Sony’s got a long haul in front of them if they want to catch up.

In many modern games, you rain death upon your enemies; how refreshing, then, that your main task in Prince of Persia is to breathe life into a darkening world. That doesn’t mean that the forces of evil aren’t on your tail in this open-world platformer, but the most indelible moments of this enchanting journey are uplifting, rather than destructive. Similarly, the latest iteration in this long-running franchise is a rejuvenation for the series, and it’s an ambitious one, offering up a new titular prince and casting certain game traditions aside in favor of player immersion. And for the most part it succeeds, eliminating illusion-breaking mechanics like game-over screens and long loading times in the process. This re-imagining comes with a few caveats, however, and if you’re a longtime series fan, you’ll quickly discover–and possibly resent–that Prince of Persia is, far and away, the easiest game in the series. But if you can clear your mind and let the game’s magic wash over you, its easygoing joy and visual beauty will charm you into forgiving a sprinkling of flaws.

When it launched in April, Grand Theft Auto IV on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 was greeted with a chorus of approval from gamers and critics alike. With the PC edition of the game arriving in stores earlier this week, the reaction has been notably different.

“Maybe after the patch… things will be different.”

Forum threads on GameSpot, Steam, and elsewhere online are lighting up with complaints from gamers about a host of performance issues. Poor frame rates even on powerful rigs, short draw distances, crashes, and missing textures are among a slew of stated issues gamers have with the title.

Not content to vent on forums, disgruntled GTAIV PC gamers have taken to Amazon.com and panned the port with negative user reviews. In addition to complaining about the game’s performance, the Amazon reviewers have taken exception to its use of SecuROM DRM technology. Of the 56 reviews on the retail site as of this writing, 46 of them have issued a 1-star-out-of-5 rating, with the customer average now sitting at 1.5 stars.

The technical support section of Rockstar’s official site acknowledges a host of known issues. For instance, Rockstar tells gamers with Nvidia 7900 series cards that a driver issue is causing the game to not render anything in the distance, leading to functionally unplayable performance. According to Rockstar, “NVidia is working on releasing a new driver as soon as possible.”

The Rockstar tech support site also suggests that missing texture issues could be caused by driver tuning programs, and includes a list of dozens of possible error codes players may have encountered. Additionally, ATI card owners are advised to set the game’s “MipMap Detail Level” slider to “quality” or they will see blacked-out textures, while the ATI 1900 series specifically has problems with flickering shadows. A patch for the shadow issue is underway, according to the developer.

As for performance issues on high-end rigs, Rockstar’s tech support documentation contained the following explanation: “Most users using current PC hardware as of December 2008 are advised to use medium graphics settings. Higher settings are provided for future generations of PCs with higher specifications than are currently widely available.”

The campaign of Far Cry 2 begins with the election of a mercenary who interpret the adventure, and almost immediately after stepping on land for the first time, we will discover that we have contracted malaria.
