Kevin Pietersen’s sensational resignation from the post of England captain was a fallout of lack support from his teammates, especially all-rounder Andrew Flintoff, in the bitter row with coach Peter Moores, British media said on Thursday (January 8).

Leading daily ‘The Guardian’ wrote that the captain’s exit was “inevitable” as the England and Wales Cricket Board “realised the extent of the dressing-room antipathy towards him”.

“The enforced resignation of Kevin Pietersen, it was asserted yesterday, was inevitable because he had conducted his campaign against the England coach Peter Moores, in the public domain. Except that is pure baloney. Pietersen had done no such thing,” the paper said.

“Pietersen’s intention was to undertake a silent revolution against Moores and he might just have pulled it off. But the rift became public on New Year’s Eve… and ECB (Managing Director Hugh) Morris was obliged to take soundings from senior players.

“He (Pietersen) had wrongly assumed that he had earned enough professional respect among England’s senior players that he would gain support,” it said.

Pietersen, who was cynosure of all eyes after England returned to India following the Mumbai terror attacks, could have stayed on as the captain despite Moores’ removal if the team had backed him, feels the press.

Tabloid ‘Daily Mirror’ also echoed the views as its headline screamed ‘Knifed in the Back’.

The paper said Pietersen quit before he was pushed after a “startling vote of no confidence from his own players” left him with “no room for manoeuvre”.

‘The Ego with Egg on his Face’ was another title in the paper which felt Pietersen paid the price for taking such a public stand against Moores.

Star all-rounder Flintoff was blamed for favouring Moores over South Africa-born Pietersen as a ‘Daily Mail’ headline read ‘Flintoff leads a mutiny’.

A report in the ‘The Sun’ also was on similar sentiments as it splashed headlines ‘Flintoff and Co stuck in knife’ and England cricket is ripped apart from hatred’ while saying the entire episode had left “England divided and demoralised”.

“Kevin Pietersen was forced into resigning as England Test and one-day captain after all rounder Andrew Flintoff and new skipper Andrew Strauss refused to back him and ECBs Managing Director Hugh Morris hinted at divisions in the team.

“The role of Andrew Flintoff in his downfall will be keenly discussed. Flintoff and Strauss named KPs replacement are understood to have stuck the knife in.

“And England boss Morris hinted at divisions in the team when he said: Kevin recognised that, in the present situation, it was impossible to restore dressing-room unity,” the paper read.

The Times blamed Moores’s “aggressive style of management” but said Pietersen “cannot issue an ultimatum to his employers at the first sign of disagreement, especially when he does not have the full backing of his own players”.

England will return home following the terror attacks in Mumbai but their Test series against India will go ahead.

The first Test is set to start on 11 December in Ahmedabad and the second, scheduled for Mumbai from 19 December, will take place at an alternate venue.

Hugh Morris, England and Wales Cricket Board performance director, said: “We want to get back to a home environment.

“It will be good for all the players. They were only in one of the hotels attacked a few weeks ago.”

The England squad are currently in Bhubaneswar, which is 850 miles from Mumbai, but they stayed at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in Mumbai a fortnight ago and were due to return there on 16 December.

“It’s been an awful tragedy that this has happened in Mumbai and the players have felt very close to it because they have been in the hotel and in the rooms and the restaurant only a couple of weeks ago,” said Morris.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) were keen for the tourists to remain in the country and complete the remainder of their seven-week tour despite the terrorist incidents, which killed at least 110 people and have injured another 300.

2008 Champions League T20 postponed

The inaugural edition of the Champions League T20 scheduled to be played in Mumbai, Bangalore and Chennai from December 3 to 10 has been postponed.

The decision was taken by the Governing Council of the Champions League T20 after consultations among the three founding board members of the tournament – Board of Control for Cricket in India, Cricket Australia and Cricket South Africa.

Lalit Modi, Chairman of the Champions League T20, said, “We held consultations among all the stakeholders including the founding members, the participating teams and members of the Governing Council after the unfortunate terrorist attacks in Mumbai on Wednesday night. It was agreed that in the best interests of all concerned, the inaugural edition of the Champions League T20 should be postponed.”

Modi continued, “We very strongly condemn this dastardly and heinous criminal act of a few which has resulted in the loss of precious lives and injury to hundreds. We offer our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and we are with them in their hour of grief.”

India captain MS Dhoni has denied he rowed with selectors over the squad for the next two ODI matches against England.

Reports in the Indian media claim Dhoni threatened to resign because medium-pacer Rudra Pratap Singh was dropped in favour of Irfan Pathan.

The selection committee, headed by Krishnamachari Srikkanth, had included Sachin Tendulkar and Irfan in the team for the next two one-dayers against England and dropped Murali Vijay and RP Singh.

“I don’t know where the report came from,” Dhoni said, adding there was no rift with the selectors “on any issue”.

“It cannot be a report because what happens inside a meeting where the selectors, the captain and the coaches are gathered… when it comes out it is disgusting and disrespectful.

“Things like this should not be happening.I’m not saying something happened at the meeting, but over the years we have seen things being leaked from meetings and things getting out.”

“There will be debates over the composition of the team and that information should not be put out in the media. “If it is meant to come out, then I can say we might as well have the whole meeting telecast live on television. “
Nobody knows what was discussed except the eight guys in the meeting and only they know whether it’s the truth or not.”

Dhoni said he had not discussed the matter with the Board of Control for Cricket in India as he felt it was too trivial.

“I didn’t think it was important. There is a lot that goes around,” he added.

“We have an important match coming up and we chose instead to focus on that match.”
Asked if he agreed with the decision to drop RP Singh for Irfan, Dhoni said: “This is a selection thing and personally I don’t discuss anything outside.

“If anything does come out, I would prefer it to come through either the BCCI, the chief selector or the group of selectors.” Dhoni agreed the controversy was a distraction for the team, but he said the players had great faith in each other.

“To some extent it does distract us. The good part is that we trust each other – every player in the team trusts each other,” Dhoni said.

“There might be a scenario where all of a sudden we might want to get in touch with RP Singh and Irfan. “It should not be a case where RP feels he is not wanted and left out. I will stand and defend both these players.

“I don’t think it is the appropriate thing to happen at a point like this.

“We do not have players in this team with outstanding talent which can win every
game but as a team we are outstanding.

“So for us the mantra is being a team and these things will not break the trust we have in each other.”

Australia were 231 for the loss of three wickets in their first innings at lunch on the third day of the fourth and final cricket Test against Australia in Nagpur today (November 8).

India dismissed Simon Katich after the southpaw completed his fifth Test hundred and guided Australia past the 200-run mark in the opening session on the day’s play.

Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni applied defensive field placements on the morning of Day 3, but could not stop Simon Katich from reaching his 5th career hundred. However, the Aussie opener was trapped leg before the wicket by Zaheer Khan soon after he reached the milestone.

Australian Vice Captain Micheal Clarke has joined Michael Hussey at the wicket as Australia now trail by less than 250 runs with 7 wickets in hand.

Mike Hussey (64) and Michael Clarke (1) were at the crese at the break.
