LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran killed

Tamil Tiger leader Velupillai Prabhakaran was shot dead by Sri Lankan special forces as he tried to stage a dramatic breakout from the army encirclement, a military spokesman said.

Prabhakaran and his top aides came out of their last hiding place in a small convoy of van and an ambulance and tried to drive out of the war zone, but were gunned down, he said. However, the army is withholding an official announcement till a DNA test of the bodies is conducted. The Tiger chief was killed with two others, who are yet to be identified but believed to be his closest associates LTTE intelligence chief Pottu Amman and Sea Tigers’ chief Soosoi.

According to the military, the Tigers tried to evacuate its leaders early this morning in two vehicles. Army special soldiers of 53 Division have intercepted the vehicles moving north and destroyed the convoy after fierce fighting.

The military said it had found 150 bodies of LTTE cadres so far and they are in the process of identifying them. Among the identified were, Charles Anthony, the eldest son of LTTE chief, B. Nadesan, LTTE’s political head, S. Pulidevan , LTTE’s head of peace secretariat, S. Ramesh, A special military leader, Kapil Amman, LTTE’s deputy intelligence leader, Sudarman , the aide to Prabhakarn’s son, Rathnam Master , a Black Tiger leader and Ilango, another senior LTTE leader

Shoot-at-sight orders issued as violence rages

Tension prevailed on Friday night around the Madras high court campus as a group of advocates staged a protest within the premises. A police contingent entered the campus late in the evening to evict them from the complex.

About 25 lawyers had stayed put inside the complex till late in the night, raising concerns within the judiciary. Eventually, the chief justice’s office gave permission to the police to enter the premises to clear out the protestors. After repeated announcements through megaphones asking advocates to vacate the campus, city police commissioner K Radhakrishnan, along with a contingent of the commando force, entered the premises. A section of lawyers then mediated to persuade their agitated colleagues to leave.

Earlier, as fresh violence was reported from across the state, director general of police K P Jain issued shoot-at-sight orders against anyone burning buses and destroying public property. “I have issued shoot-at-sight orders against anyone resorting to violence and damaging public property,” Jain told The Times of India.

Speaking on the eve of the historic ceremony, he hailed the civil rights leader as “not just a dreamer, but a doer” who worked tirelessly for change.

Mr Obama will become the first black man to take office at the White House, a milestone that few believed possible when Dr King was assassinated four decades ago.

Speaking at a shelter for homeless teenagers, Mr Obama said: “Given the crisis that we’re in and the hardships that so many people are going through, we can’t allow any idle hands.

“Everybody’s got to be involved. Everybody’s going to have to pitch in. We want to rebuild America.”

Mr Obama, who was elected on a slogan of “change” and whose campaign was built on grassroots activism, will be sworn in as the 44th President of the United States.

He will use the name Barack Hussein Obama II, using the middle name he avoided during his election campaign because of its association with Islam and the deposed dictator of Iraq.

As many as two million people, hundreds of thousands of them already braving freezing temperatures to throng Washington, are expected to gather outside the Capitol for the inauguration ceremony.

Some 40 minutes after Mr Obama, flanked by bulletproof screens, has solemnly sworn to “faithfully execute the office of president”, the former President George W. Bush will depart for Texas.

Mr Obama takes office at a time of economic crisis when America is engaged in wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. With an approval rating of just 22 per cent, according to a CBS/New York Times poll, Mr Bush departs as the most unpopular president to leave office since polling began.

By contrast, Mr Obama has a deep well of goodwill to draw from. The same poll found that 80 per cent of Americans were optimistic about the next four years under the former Illinois senator while most also expressed patience about how long it might take him to turn the economy around.

Mr Obama’s inaugural speech is expected to be a call to service for Americans and a request for sacrifice, echoing President John F. Kennedy’s 1961 exhortation to “ask not what your country can do for you – ask what you can do for your country”.
